About Us

Learn more about our practice’s history & values

Dermatology Associates of Virginia’s mission is to provide compassionate, high quality, and cost-conscious dermatologic care to the central Virginia region.

Charles M. Caravati, Jr., M.D., a Richmond native, founded Dermatology Associates of Virginia in 1969. The original office started on Hamilton Street in the near West End, but was soon moved to a house on Grove Avenue. Since then, Dermatology Associates has grown to twenty-one providers practicing at six central Virginia locations. We have one office in Colonial Heights and five in the greater Richmond area.

Our doctors and physician assistants provide medical and surgical treatments for skin diseases occurring in patients of all ages. While the treatment of skin diseases and skin cancers is our specialty, we also offer a variety of cosmetic services. Furthermore, our highly professional team members address all of our patient’s skin diseases in convenient, comfortable and attractive settings.

Our dermatologists are all board certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Additionally, all are members of our local, state and national dermatological and medical professional societies.

DAV is a founding member of MD Value Care, an organization of independent physician practices in Richmond, VA. We believe that we can excel in quality, patient experience, and cost-effectiveness.

An advance practice provider (APP) enhances the patient service provided by Dermatology Associates of Virginia by offering a team approach to healthcare delivery. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners are able to provide a wide range of examinations and procedures under the direction and close supervision of the patient’s normal physician. This clinical partnership allows for additional time to be spent with patients by the physician-APP team depending on the treatment, education, and follow-up care needed. Many treatments are of a nature which allows follow up assessment by the APP, and appointments with the APP can often be scheduled sooner than with the supervising physician. In general, the supervising physician is always working in the same clinic with the APP and is readily available should further collaboration be needed.

Q&A:

  • What is your favorite thing about your career?
It's a true joy to get to know my patients and build long term relationships with them.  I think that is the part I love most, but I also love the opportunity to keep learning about the latest in dermatology science and therapy.
  • What are your hobbies?
I love a good puzzle!  1000 pieces or more.  This keeps my formal dining room table in use.  My husband and I also like to travel when we can convince our parents to come and watch our three young daughters.
  • What's the  most daring thing you've ever done?
I acted and danced in SPOOF (my medical school's annual comedy show).  That was pretty daring for me, but a lot of fun.
  • How many languages do you speak?
Two.  English and Spanish.  My family is from Argentina so I grew up speaking Spanish at home and, although my American accent is strong, I love speaking Spanish with patients.
